Voices from the Abyss is a 60-minute documentary film about veganism and the animal rights movement around the world, expressing the hopes and fears of a generation. The film is the vision of Producer and Director Carla Lopez, who has been a vegetarian since she was five years old. At an early age, Carla understood that animals are not mere objects, but instead sentient beings and our equals on this planet. Voices from the Abyss is largely her point of view as a director on an ongoing fight for a change. Carla is herself an activist and a vegan and she has continued to evolve, absorbing many different influences and taking on new creative forms to spread the word about the philosophy and ethics of veganism. Through interviews and the use of undercover film footage, photos, and other archival material, Voices from the Abyss will depict the lives of grassroots activists and experts from around the world that are denouncing and fighting all forms of animal suffering and abuse. Following a brief overview of the animal rights movement, the film will be told through the testimonies of those who lived through these promising yet violent times against animals in modern history. Using interviews to be filmed across South America, Australia, Canada and the United States the film will document the lives and work of pioneering vegans and animal rights activists of our times, including: Ana Maria Aboglio from Argentina, Philip Wollen of Australia, Gary Yourofsky, Holly Willson, Gary Smith, and Randall Cannon from the United States as well as other activists from Spain, and other Latin American countries. These interviews will lend extra power to the undercover footage of animal abuse and torture and the biographical material of the activists will show how they spread the ethics of veganism and animal advocacy. There will also be interviews of people with different point of views to provide sufficient context and discussion of the issues of animal abuse. By focusing on individual vegans and activists and their specific feelings about the movement, Voices from the Abyss will capture the universality of their experiences and illustrate the many ways in which they create a powerful movement for social change. This documentary will ultimately reveal the ability of veganism and animal rights activists to express the shared hopes and dreams of people everywhere striving to make the world a better place.
